The duties of the Athletic Trainer include but are not limited to, prevention of athletic injuries, recognition, evaluation, and immediate care of athletic injuries, rehabilitation and reconditioning of athletic injuries and health care administration. The athletic trainer serves as a liaison between physicians, coaches, athletes, and parents. The Athletic Trainer ensures that players participate only when physically able and that any physician instructions are understood and followed. The Athletic Trainer will coordinate with the Athletic Director to ensure that the athletic training room and all required events will be covered.
REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS: Reports directly to the Athletic Director and indirectly to the building Principal. Works cooperatively with administrators, supervisors, staff, parents/guardians, students and others to perform job responsibilities as outlined
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 1. 10-month position, pre- and post-season and as outlined in the current Compensation Plan. Normal workday is from 10:30 am until 6:00 pm, but will need to be flexible to include some evening and Saturday contests/practices and holiday assignments. The Athletic Trainer is not expected to cover any Sunday events. 2. Salary (step/level placement) & Benefits are as described in the current Compensation Plan.
QUALIFICATIONS PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: 1. To successfully perform this position, a person must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The qualification requirements listed below represent minimum levels of educational achievement, training, skill and/or ability necessary. • Pennsylvania State Athletic Trainer licensure • National Athletic Trainers Association Board of Certification (NATA BOC) Certification. Must be a member in good standing with NATA, the local NATA District and the State Athletic Trainers' Association • Possess effective interpersonal skills with the ability to interface diplomatically with other teachers, administrators, parents, students, support staff and outside professional contacts
2. Qualified candidate will be required to use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools or controls, and to talk and hear; Sit and occasionally be required to stand, walk, stoop, kneel and crouch; Have specific vision abilities, to include close vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus; have the ability to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds; and possess effective communication, judgmental, planning and human relations skills, and will be required to work under periods of stress due to the level of the position responsibility.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Provide coverage for home varsity contests on a schedule cooperatively determined by Athletic Trainer and Athletic Director, as well as cover non-varsity contests in football and varsity football away games. Varsity and selected non-varsity contests will be covered based on the risk of the sports and the availability of the Athletic Trainer during a particular sport season. 2. Provide practice coverage as determined by the Athletic Director and Athletic Director will typically include daily coverage of varsity and non-varsity sports. This coverage will be based upon injury risk of the sport and other mutually agreed upon factors. 3. Cover selected postseason contests as determined by the Athletic Trainer and Athletic Director. 4. Provide for the prevention of athletic injuries through the application of protective tapings, wraps, and braces, and assist in the design of practices to help to reduce the incidence of injury. 5. Advise coaches of flexibility, strengthening, and conditioning programs to help prevent injuries and optimize performance. 6. Provide immediate care of athletic injuries and refer the athlete to medical facilities when necessary. 7. Design and supervise rehabilitation programs for athletic injuries under the direction of a referring physician. 8. Keep medical histories and correspondence on file in the athletic training room. The athletic trainer will maintain accurate medical records for injuries, treatment, rehabilitation, physician referrals and maintain records of progress for all treatments. 9. Be responsible for budgeting, ordering, and inventorying athletic training supplies through the Athletic Director. 10. May serve as a consultant to the middle school athletic program by advising middle school athletics in the athletic training room on an appointment basis. 11. May advise and assist with equipment purchases and fittings. 12. Maintain open channels of communications with coaches, parents and physicians regarding athletic injuries, treatment, and rehabilitation. 13. Arrange for emergency transportation (home events, practice and trips) and physical care when necessary. 14. Make routine visits to the practice field and be present for hazardous play time (games, scrimmage, etc.). 15. Be able to render immediate decisions on the playing status of an injured player in the absence of a physician. 16. Review the WSSD emergency medical procedure with all coaches and athletes each season. 17. Establish daily hours of operation for the athletic training room. 18. Establish a working relationship with a designated team physician and community physicians. 19. Direct and supervise the work of student trainer(s) from local universities or colleges. 20. Responsibilities include coverage for fall, winter and spring sports including preseason and postseason play. The Athletic Trainer will be paid up to 8 hours (blue carded) per day for pre-season in August. 21. Maintains the standards established by the National Athletic Trainers' Association (NATA)
